One of the most debated topics in the legal-digital world today is that of right to repair it’s at Applealthough it has promoted important advances in recent years in this regard — and even publicly expressed its support for it —, it still seems to be far from being a reference company for the cause.

Proof of this is the case of the Colombian engineer Wilmer Becerra, which was notified extrajudicially by Maçã after publishing a series of videos teaching how to repair the brand’s products. He has an informal technical assistance network present in nine countries in Latin America and the fame obtained through his publications (he already has more than 12 million followers) has attracted the company’s most attentive eyes.

In an interview with Folha de S.Paulo, Becerra said that Apple’s first attack took place in July this year, when the company asked him about the parts used to repair the devices. The engineer stated that he obtains them from authorized stores in the United States, a country where laws have been enacted that deal with the right to repairs in the last.

In his response, sent to the company on August 1st, he defended the concept of right to repair. On his social networks, the man even claims that his actions are more effective in promoting sustainability than Apple’s own recycling system, which takes old devices to produce new parts.

Maçã’s “onslaught” against Becerra had a lot of repercussions — enough to attract the attention of both Latin American newspapers and internationally known vehicles, like spanish The country.

The engineer even took steps to prepare for possible losses that could be caused by possible legal proceedings, setting up a service to produce personalized covers for iPhones — a business whose revenue would pay for the lawyers’ payments.

Amid all the repercussion of the case, Apple — which chose not to comment on the case when contacted by the newspaper — sent a second statement promising not to take any legal action against the engineer, as long as he stopped displaying the company’s logo on your videos.

Maçã also “invited” him to invest in authorized technical assistance, but he told Sheet which does not intend to accept the proposal, as one of Maçã’s guidelines for official repair services states that assistance should not repair defective parts — but rather replace them.

Currently, Becerra’s business is present in countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and Panama. In Brazil, according to him, language barriers still prevent investment.
