Ensuring French Food Origin: Crackdown on Mislabeling at Auchan de Balma

This was one of the promises made to farmers during last month’s crisis. A control operation around the origin of foodstuffs took place Wednesday morning at Auchan de Balma, east of Toulouse. In the sights of State services: the “Frenchization” of products which consists of announcing a French origin for fruits, vegetables or even meat, when it is not.

During this educational inspection, the regional prefect Pierre-André Durand announced that controls will be increased. 10,000 checks this year nationally, 1,000 in Occitanie. In our region, 238 have already been carried out since January 1, 35 in Haute-Garonne. Controls are carried out at the retailer, in mass distribution, or further upstream at the trading stage or at intermediaries.

Still too much lack of rigor

Results since January 1 in Occitania: 47 reminders of the regulations, 26 administrative injunctions and 21 criminal proceedings. Overall, there is still too much lack of rigor in the labeling and presentation of products according to the DREETS (Regional Directorates of the Economy, Employment, Labor and Solidarity) which oversees the controls.

Last year, 800 tonnes of strawberries were identified as Frenchified (i.e. 1 million punnets) and 40 tonnes of parsley (400,000 bunches). The most serious breaches are punishable by fines of up to 300,000 euros and two years in prison, recalls the regional Prefect.
