Essonne: egg producers demand a “price increase” in front of Carrefour headquarters

Egg producers are unhappy. A hundred of them demonstrated this Friday morning in front of the headquarters of Carrefour in Massy (Essonne) to ask the large distribution “a revaluation of prices” and a “taking into account of production costs” on the rise. In particular, they threw hundreds of eggs at the windows of the building.

According to the trade unions in the sector, egg producers are faced with a “sharp increase” in production costs caused in particular by “the continuous rise in the price of the raw materials composing the feed for laying hens”. The French Confederation of Poultry (CFA) requests in particular a revaluation of two euro cents per egg and four cents for organic.

Tense trade negotiations for a few weeks

The producers also denounce “the total non-compliance with the EGAlim 2 law (which aims to protect the remuneration of farmers) and the misunderstanding to which they are subject” by the distributors, explain the CFA, the Union of producer groups of meat from Brittany (UGPVB) and the FRSEA Bretagne. These organizations believe that Carrefour is the most reluctant brand to integrate these cost increases, which is why it was targeted on Friday. The president of the egg section of the UGPVB, Frédéric Chartier, told him that “farmers will not be able to spend the year 2022 without this revaluation”.

For several weeks, trade negotiations have been very tense between the food industry and supermarkets. From large groups such as Danone, Fleury Michon or McCain, to SMEs, all are in the process of negotiating with the supermarket purchasing centers the prices at which their production will be purchased.
