The European Parliament has launched an internal investigation following the circulation of a forged email, Politico EU reported. The fraudulent message disparaged the work of Portuguese EPP lawmaker Sebastião Bugalho right before a crucial vote.
Investigation Launched Behind Closed Doors
EPP group chair Manfred Weber announced the parliamentary probe to all group lawmakers during a closed-door meeting on Monday afternoon, according to four attendees who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the topic. The controversy centers on a fake email targeting Sebastião Bugalho and his legislative record.
When asked about the message, Bugalho’s office stated that he would obviously not comment on forged emails. Pedro López de Pablo, the EPP’s press director, confirmed the institutional response, stating that the group had been informed that an investigation is underway.

Halicki sent his request for an investigation by Belgian authorities to Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Friday. “As I know, the Parliament immediately reacted, and the investigation has been launched,” Halicki said, referring to the internal probe.
Fierce Campaigning Ahead of the Vice-Chair Vote
The digital sabotage unfolded amid a high-stakes campaign for the EPP’s coveted vice-chair positions. Twelve lawmakers, including both Bugalho and Halicki, are battling it out for just 10 available spots. The election vote is scheduled for Tuesday.
