Exploring Materials in Contemporary Art: The Amstetten Art Initiative Exhibition

2023-11-14 11:00:00

The Amstetten Art Initiative (KIAM) illuminates the debate from the perspective of the materials used in an extremely knowledgeable and exciting exhibition. In this, thirteen artists, including Pius Litzlbauer, Alfred Koch, Rosemarie König and Ulrike Asamer, present their personal reflections and describe access to the various materials in pointed statements.

There is no material in contemporary art that is avoided by artists. For centuries, the flawless elaboration of form that tames and overcomes the material has been considered the epitome of art. Today, not only those considered noble, such as marble and gold, but also low-grade materials such as earth, industrial waste, plastic, medical tools and everyday objects are used to produce artistic works.

While this approach was previously seen as a violation of boundaries, today work with unusual materials seems more exciting. The works of art on display here have no technical significance, but rather their appearance is determined by the material and its processing and determines its aesthetic effect. In the associative exhibition you can experience the wealth of different materials that are used in art.

In this exhibition, the viewer’s gaze is drawn to the three-dimensional world on the one hand, and to the materials used on the other. In addition to absolute technical security, this presentation is characterized by mastery of artistic means.
