(CNN) — More than 40 million people — mainly in southern Louisiana, central and southern Texas and southern Florida — are under heat advisories this Saturday, according to the National Metereological Service (NWS).

“Widespread record heat during the day will be near historic with temperatures in the 100° F (nearly 38° C) and could build up to 120° F (48° C). Some monthly heat records may be broken in June,” says the NWS.

The affected cities include Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christ, Brownsville, Dallas, Lake Charles, Shreveport, New Orleans and Miami.

In general, temperatures in this region will be 10 to 15 degrees above normal and this heat wave is expected to last until the middle of next week.

Risk of storms in the south

An increased risk of severe weather (level 3 of 5) is in effect for this Saturday and Sunday in parts of the southern US, according to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC, in English).

The risk this Saturday is centered in Oklahoma, parts of the Texas Territory (including Perryton, which was hit by an EF-3 tornado Thursday) and southern Kansas.

The SPC notes that there is a threat of “damaging golf ball-sized hail, severe to extremely severe gusts of wind in excess of 70 mph (113 km/h), and a few tornadoes from southeastern Colorado to northwestern Arkansas.”

Most storms are expected to develop during the late afternoon and evening hours.

Overall, 60 million people are at risk from storms, from Colorado to Florida.

The highest level of risk Sunday is centered in the lower Mississippi River Valley, which includes Arkansas, much of Mississippi and northern Louisiana, as this Saturday night’s storms move east. during the early hours of the morning.

A new round of storms is likely to develop across this region and continue into the tip of Florida this Sunday afternoon and evening, bringing damaging winds and large hail, along with a few isolated tornadoes.

Additionally, heavy rains could cause isolated flash flooding in the Deep South, especially in parts of the Florida panhandle, as well as north and central Florida.
