The holidays in the south of France, in Port Barcarès, of a family from the north of the country, came to an end. As Het Laatste Nieuws explains, a dip in the Mediterranean Sea of the little boy of the family, aged 7, indeed took an unexpected turn: “I have never heard a child cry so loudly”, explains the father from the boy to our colleagues.

“I am an osteopath and at first I thought he had broken his neck while diving,” he continues. “At first, you couldn’t see anything, but he kept screaming. Then we put him on his back and we gradually saw a mark on his neck. The family rushed to the first aid station on the beach, then to the pharmacy: “Nobody knew what had happened. When you hear your child cry “Dad, I’m going to die”, you imagine the worst”.

When his wound turned purple, the family went to the hospital in Perpignan. “His ear had doubled in size, his skin was puckered and his neck looked like it was broken.” Eventually, a pediatrician at the hospital contacted a toxicologist who was able to quickly make a diagnosis. The child had just been stung by a sea anemone.

According to the specialist, the child was going to recover completely and will not keep any trace of these injuries. But a week later, after an appointment at the Military Hospital of Neder-Over-Heembeek, his parents are not so convinced, because the scars are still present.

Unlike jellyfish, sea anemones usually stay on the seabed. It is therefore very rare that humans come into contact with her. Uncomplicated, their injuries only last a day or two, but some cases can be fatal. “If he had been a little younger, he might not have made it,” his dad concluded.
