FBI, ATF Support Minnesota’s Somali Gang Crackdown

Minnesota law enforcement agencies have launched a coordinated regional framework backed by federal resources to address a recent spike in Twin Cities gang violence linked to East African groups. During a Monday news conference, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension announced that 46 agencies have agreed to collaborate under the state’s Crime Gun Intelligence Center to share intelligence across jurisdictional lines.

The joint initiative brings in federal support from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives alongside local, county, and state entities. Officials running the data-driven policing effort aim to bridge information gaps between departments that hold separate pieces of investigative data regarding active regional groups.

Recent Incidents and Regional Impact

The multi-agency task force comes on the heels of several high-profile public shootings across the metropolitan area in recent months. Authorities have connected the regional violence to an array of disruptive incidents, including a shooting outside the Eden Prairie homecoming football game, gunfire at an Edina church, a barrage of more than 100 rounds fired outside a Bloomington residence tied to the Eden Prairie case, and a daytime shooting along Highway 100 in St. Louis Park.

Local leaders, such as Eden Prairie Mayor Ron Case and Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher, have spent months pressing for a unified regional task force. Sheriff Fletcher previously convened a community meeting addressing safety concerns after a wave of unrest over the Fourth of July weekend.

Law enforcement leadership emphasizes that the criminal activity is driven by a very small fraction of the broader population. Sheriff Fletcher estimates that local Somali gangs comprise roughly 300 total members spread across 13 separate entities.
