Belgium is back at level 3, i.e. a “serious threat”, which it has not experienced since January 2018. A decision which can be explained by the ongoing investigation duties following Monday’s attack. , the fear of copycats and the international context. The Coordination Body for Threat Analysis (Ocam) estimated, as of Tuesday afternoon, that there was no longer a “serious and imminent threat” in Brussels. The threat level, which had risen in the capital to 4 – the maximum – during the hours following the attack, was reduced to 3, the same level as for the entire Belgian territory.

But last weekend, the country was still at level 2. Since the attack on Monday evening, the alert level has therefore been raised a notch in the Kingdom. A fact which is not trivial, since we have to go back to January 2018, almost six years ago, to find the whole of Belgium at 3 out of 4 on the threat scale.
