Players on home consoles face a hardware restriction and mandatory cooperative failure points in the latest cross-over event for Final Fantasy XIV, 4Gamers reported on October 28, 2026. The virtual crossover with Final Fantasy VII introduces a typing minigame that excludes controller users and locks character costumes behind strict gender boundaries.
Keybound Brawler Debuts at the Gold Saucer
The collaboration event opened on October 28, 2026, inside the Gold Saucer. It features a minigame titled Keybound Brawler where up to four participants defend against enemy waves by typing on-screen text rapidly. Success grants MGC currency to spend on Final Fantasy VII rewards, including character outfits, mounts, minipets, and emotes.
Players must operate an actual physical keyboard to complete the challenges. The activity does not support screen virtual keyboards or standard gamepads. Final Fantasy XIV has supported home consoles since the PlayStation 3 era, leaving numerous active players who rely solely on controllers unable to participate without purchasing extra hardware.
Costume Limitations and Multi-Player Friction
Outfits modeled after Tifa and Barret carry strict gender restrictions that prevent characters of the opposite in-game gender from equipping them. Accessories like sunglasses also face these limitations. Previous cross-over events included gender-neutral clothing options, which added to the surprise among players who prioritize the game’s glamour system.
The multi-player cooperative design creates additional hurdles during random matching. If a participant remains idle or fails to type actively during a session, the defense line falls and ends the challenge early for everyone involved. Frustrated participants voiced demands for a solo mode to bypass unresponsive teammates.
Event Schedule and Remaining Access
The collaboration runs until the release of version 8.0. Square Enix stated that the event will return at irregular intervals in the future. The current schedule leaves the hardware requirements and cooperative mechanics unchanged for the duration of this release window.
