Square Enix launched Final Fantasy Resonance on October 22, 2026, bringing its first HD-2D title to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The console RPG reimagines the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a turn-based adventure featuring classic mechanics and legacy character summons.
Square Enix has released Final Fantasy Resonance across major gaming platforms worldwide. The new title adapts the first season of the discontinued mobile gacha game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a fully realized console role-playing experience. Alongside the global launch, the publisher made a free demo available for the first chapter, with save data carrying over to the full game upon purchase.

Square Enix Brings Pixel Art To HD-2D
The project represents the first time Square Enix has applied its trademarked pixel-and-3D hybrid aesthetic to the main franchise. While the visual style debuted in 2018 with Octopath Traveler, reviewers noted that the presentation receives a substantial level-up in this release, incorporating cinematic camera direction and smooth performance.
Underneath the retro-modern presentation, the narrative follows childhood friends Rain and Lasswell serving as knights for the Kingdom of Grandshelt. Their peaceful existence fractures when an armored intruder attacks the castle, steals a magical relic, and destroys the sacred Earth Crystal.
Set in the land of Lapis, the plot centers on characters created by developer Square Enix and Lancarse. The internal development of the project involved teams such as Team Asano within Creative Studio 5 and Lancarse Ltd.
Battling Enemies With Stagger Mechanics
Every enemy features a health bar accompanied by a stamina or stagger bar. Whittling down an opponent’s health defeats them, while emptying their stamina interrupts attacks and plunges them into a stagger state. This state forces enemies to absorb increased damage while granting the opposing party a bonus turn. Staggering every surviving enemy on the field triggers a sweeping stagger, awarding the entire team a bonus end-of-round action.
Players can further optimize combat performance through specific passive setups. For instance, running the Restore MP when Taking Damage
and Fill LB when Taking Damage
skills grants Rain virtually infinite MP and keeps his Limit Break ready constantly.
Equipping Classic Visions For Combat
A core gameplay system revolves around equipping Visions—echoes of characters from previous entries in the franchise. Players encounter crystal shrines throughout the world that introduce these legacy heroes, granting combat assistance and permanent baseline stats such as health and speed.

Characters earn affinity points the more they utilize an assigned Vision, unlocking transferable skills and job roles akin to classic franchise mechanics. When parties successfully stagger opponents, they can unleash cinematic finishing moves tied to their equipped Visions.
By staggering all opponents during combat – finding their weakness and depleting their stagger meter – I was given the choice of using any of my equipped Visions’ dazzling cinematic finishers, such as Cloud’s (Final Fantasy VII) brutal Ascension Resonance.

The system spans 26 distinct companions drawn from across the main numbered entries in the series. Players can also utilize the destination list on the world map screen to travel across locations quickly, while regular save points allow for teleportation back to inns when managing inventories or supplies.
Playing On Consoles And PC
The title is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, with cross-platform support through Xbox Play Anywhere. Handheld testing across portable devices indicates that performance varies by hardware, while the Nintendo Switch 2 runs the game at a smooth 60 frames per second.
Technical options on PC support resolutions ranging from 720p up to 4K. On Steam Deck models, the game defaults to 720p on high settings, operating cleanly on the Steam Deck LCD while requiring the OLED model’s screen to be capped at 60Hz because it cannot sustain a steady 90 frames per second, with minor dips occasionally appearing below 60 frames per second during intense particle effects.
