Two winners and four awards in the New Construction and Revitalization categories

It is very gratifying that sustainability and social ecology have long since arrived in planning and building. Awareness is heightened – the innovations are huge and make an important contribution to a climate-neutral future. The projects submitted show what possibilities concrete offers as a building material and how structures that focus on longevity, sustainability and flexibility can be built.

Anton Glasmaier, CEO of Concrete Dialog Austria

Vienna (OTS) – The Austrian Concrete Prize 2023, awarded by Concrete Dialogue Austria (BDÖ) for the first time this year, was awarded today. The top-class jury selected a winning project in each of the categories New Construction and Revitalization. Four recognition prizes were awarded.

The 56 high-quality and particularly diverse submissions, from infrastructure projects to residential buildings, made the jury – consisting of Daniel Fügenschuh, architect from Innsbruck and President of the Federal Chamber of Civil Engineers (Jury Chairman), Ute Schaller, Head of the Competence Center “Social and Cultural Infrastructure, sustainability in building construction” in the building department of the City of Vienna, Renate Hammer, architect and managing partner at the Institute of Building Research & Innovation, Stefan Sattler, MA 20 of the City of Vienna Energy Planning, Elmar Hagmann, managing partner at Wilhelm Sedlak GmbH, Berthold Kren , President of the Austrian Cement Industry Association (VÖZ) and CEO of Holcim Austria, and Franziska Leeb, architecture journalist, – the decision was not easy. The Austrian Concrete Prize is the logical further development of the GVTB Concrete Prize, which has been awarded annually by the Ready-Mix Concrete Quality Association (GVTB) since 2013.

Wientalterrassen and Rathaus Prinzersdorf as winning projects

In the first round, the jury nominated 20 projects – then an exciting discussion followed, in which the focus was on the advertised criteria of the Austrian Concrete Prize – sustainability, functionality, performance, innovation and design. Finally, the jury members selected two winning projects and four recognitions. The two winning projects were duly celebrated at the award ceremony, and the four recognitions will also act as role models. Anton Glasmaier, BDÖ Chairman and Managing Director of the Association of Austrian Concrete and Precast Plants, is impressed by the quality of the projects: “It is very gratifying that sustainability and social ecology have long since arrived in planning and building. Awareness is heightened – the innovations are huge and make an important contribution to a climate-neutral future. The projects submitted show the possibilities that concrete offers as a building material and how structures that focus on longevity, sustainability and flexibility can succeed.”

The jury agreed on two winning projects: the Wientalterrassen residential area with the Käthe-Dorsch-Gasse 17 component in the new construction category and the general refurbishment of the Prinzersdorf town hall with an extension in the revitalization category: “At the Wientalterrassen, the residential development at Käthe-Dorsch-Gasse 17 in Vienna-Penzing, all social and ecological criteria are perfectly met: On the one hand, the social mix of students, families, pensioners and cluster apartments was successful here, on the other hand, the complex has great courtyards, a climate-friendly, sophisticated system of energy supply with geothermal energy and component activation together water treatment as well as a research project with asphalt collectors”, according to the jury’s reasoning. For the jury, the general refurbishment and the extension of the Prinzersdorf town hall are a prime example of future-oriented planning and building: the revitalization of the town hall from the 1970s activated the town center of Prinzersdorf, instead of a new building the property was renovated in an ecologically demanding and resource-saving manner.

BDÖ CEO Anton Glasmaier and jury chairman Daniel Fügenschuh presented the companies involved in the two winning projects with a trophy in the form of a concrete dodecahedron that had been specially developed for this year’s Austrian Concrete Prize. The trophy was graphically designed by Susanne Teschner and made by the Linz artist frauklarer. The event took place in CAPE 10 – House of Good Hope: a project of the non-profit CAPE 10 Foundation. The income generated from events finances the house’s social projects.

The Austrian Concrete Prize will be awarded for the next time in 2025.
