The virus responsible for the disease is transmitted by biting midges of the genus Culicoides. It is not transmitted to humans. In cattle, the disease is potentially fatal. It results in fever, anorexia, lameness and respiratory distress. Small ruminants can also carry the virus but no symptomatic cases have yet been reported.

The virus is present since October 2022 in Europe, where it had been reported in Italy and Spain. Analyzes have confirmed that the serotype of the virus arriving in France is the same as that circulating in these countries, namely serotype 8. For the moment, there is no effective vaccine against this serotype. The development of a suitable vaccine is being considered by manufacturers.

European Regulation 2016/429 relating to transmissible animal diseases requires declare outbreaks of epizootic hemorrhagic disease to the French authorities.
