Fluid Audio tackles home studio bass build-up with the SRI-2, a wedge-shaped USB 2.0 desktop audio interface featuring two Class A preamps, 24-bit/192 kHz conversion, and built-in front-panel monitor switching that drives two pairs of speakers without extra hardware.
Home studios frequently encounter a persistent acoustic hurdle: a mix sounds balanced on studio monitors, only for vocals to vanish beneath heavy low-end response once played back in a vehicle. While Fluid Audio previously addressed speaker-side accuracy through monitor designs like the FX8 and C5, the SRI-2 desktop unit approaches the problem directly from the interface side, allowing producers to toggle between separate speaker systems instantly.
Front-Panel Monitor Switching and Precision Outputs
Checking mixes on an alternative speaker setup remains an effective method for identifying arrangement flaws before finalizing a track. Typically, this workflow requires an external monitor controller cabled alongside the primary audio interface. The SRI-2 integrates this capability directly into its chassis, housing four balanced TRS outputs that accommodate two distinct pairs of monitors. A dedicated front-panel button lets engineers flip between the main monitors and a secondary set—such as compact computer speakers representing typical consumer playback environments—without reaching behind the desk.
Master volume adjustments are handled by a solid aluminum knob featuring a rubber grip. Fluid Audio specifies 102 dB of dynamic range and 0.0014% THD+N on the main outputs. Meanwhile, the headphone output features a dedicated level control delivering 75 mW per side into 32 ohms, paired with an output impedance under 10 ohms that accommodates common closed-back tracking headphones.
Class A Preamps, Hi-Z Modes, and Conversion Performance
Recording tasks run through two Class A preamps on combo XLR and quarter-inch inputs, supplying up to 46 dB of gain alongside +48V phantom power for condenser microphones. Dedicated buttons toggle individual channels between mic, line, and instrument levels. Engaging instrument mode switches the input to a 1 MΩ Hi-Z load offering up to 52 dB of gain, preserving high frequencies and signal levels for passive guitars that might otherwise sound dull through standard line inputs.
The line inputs accept signals reaching up to +25 dBu, with gain ranges spanning from -11 to +29 dB. This negative gain range allows users to tame unusually hot signals from synthesizers or outboard compressors directly at the interface. Fluid Audio measures 104 dB of dynamic range on the mic inputs, with a frequency response maintained within 0.1 dB across 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Conversion supports sample rates from 44.1 kHz up to 192 kHz, encompassing 48, 88.2, 96, and 176.4 kHz settings for high-resolution tracking or video production workflows.
Direct Monitoring and Bus-Powered Portability
Software monitoring introduces latency that can disrupt vocalists during a take, but the SRI-2 includes a physical direct monitoring knob to blend live incoming signals with DAW playback. Default configurations map input 1 to the left channel and input 2 to the right, while a physical SUM
button collapses both into mono. This mono fold-down assists singer-songwriters by centering voice and guitar rather than isolating them to opposite sides.
Housed in an anodised aluminum chassis, the angled wedge design tilts controls upward toward the user. The unit operates entirely on USB 2.0 bus power—including phantom power—allowing a laptop-based setup to function away from studio power outlets. It offers class compliance on Mac and Windows systems, accompanied by a dedicated Windows driver from Fluid Audio. iPad compatibility is also supported via Apple’s Camera Connection Kit and an auxiliary power supply connected to the unit’s micro USB input.
Out-of-the-box software bundles include Cubase LE for desktop users and Cubasis LE for iPad, alongside an included USB cable. When Performer Magazine evaluated the interface, it reported zero cons and recommended the hardware to budget-conscious home studio owners for its practical feature set and durable construction.
