Former American Idol contestant and music pastor Caleb Flynn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury convicted him of murdering his wife, 37-year-old schoolteacher and volleyball coach Ashley Flynn, as reported.
The Murder, the Staged Break-In, and the Investigation
Prosecutors detailed how Flynn, 40, shot his wife in February at their home in Tipp City, a suburb north of Dayton, Ohio. Following the shooting, Flynn staged a home invasion to make it appear as though a burglar had broken in through the garage. Their two children, ages 9 and 11, were sleeping in the house when police arrived.
Mulligan stated that he plans to file an appeal, noting a lack of evidence regarding prior calculation and design, and argued that infidelity alone does not prove murder. Nonetheless, prosecutors presented forensic evidence showing Flynn’s fingerprints and DNA at the scene, alongside digital device tracking that placed him moving around the house during the time of the murder, contradicting his claims of being asleep. Neither Flynn nor any other defense witness testified during the trial, and his defense team called no witnesses.
The Affair, the Text Messages, and AI Love Songs
The trial exposed a months-long extramarital affair between Flynn and Alleigha Botner, who met Flynn in 2022 while working as a 20-year-old church intern. Botner testified that Flynn frequently expressed deep resentment toward his wife. Botner also wept on the stand as she read a message she had sent him reading, I want to kill her, Caleb,
to which Flynn had answered, That makes two of us.
The night before the shooting, Flynn sent his lover a message declaring, I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow,
according to prosecutors. Jurors also reviewed AI-generated love songs that Flynn had created for Botner during their relationship.

Daughters’ Letters and Courtroom Sentences
During the emotional sentencing hearing presided over by Judge Jeannine Pratt, harrowing victim impact statements written by the couple’s daughters were read aloud. The letter added, You made me feel like an idiot thinking I could trust you,
and confirmed she would never visit him in prison. In his brief 2013 appearance on American Idol, Flynn had told TV viewers that he loved his wife more than anything
and that she had encouraged him to chase his dreams on the singing competition, though he did not advance to the main competition in Hollywood.
Judge Pratt rebuked Flynn during sentencing, expressing deep disturbance that he utilized his faith to mask his lust and deceit, and categorized him as an extreme risk to the public.
Taking the podium before his sentencing, Flynn wept openly and addressed his family, admitting to marital infidelity. I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day.
Despite admitting to numerous lies, Flynn maintained his innocence in the actual murder, telling the court, As I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife.
The jury ultimately found Flynn guilty of murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence.
