Former Formula 1 driver Philippe Streiff has died.

Cologne (SID) – Former Formula 1 driver Philippe Streiff is dead. The Frenchman died on Friday at the age of 67, which Formula 1 officially announced on Christmas Eve. “Philippe Streiff’s death makes me very sad,” said Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali: “He has shown courage and determination all his life.”

Courage and determination were required, especially after that serious accident during test drives in March 1989 on the Jacarepagua circuit in Brazil. Streiff barely survived, but from then on was confined to a wheelchair as a quadriplegic.

The Frenchman had previously driven in Formula 1 from 1984 to 1989 for Renault, Tyrrell, Ligier and ATS. Streiff was also successful on long-distance routes: in 1981, in a team with Jean-Louis Schlesser and Jacky Haran, he took second place in the 24-hour classic in Le Mans.
