According to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, the French are more confident about the evolution of their standard of living and their financial situation.

Household morale in France improved slightly in April, with the French showing more confidence in the evolution of their standard of living and their financial situation, INSEE said on Wednesday. The indicator, which reflects household confidence, gained one point to 83 points compared to March. However, this level remains well below the long-term average (100 points).

The opinion of households on their standard of living over the next twelve months has increased by three points, while that on the past evolution of their standard of living has remained almost stable, but they remain at low levels, specified the National Institute of Statistics (Insee) in a press release.

Rise in optimism

At the same time, the share of households considering that prices will rise even faster “declines sharply”, falling by 17 points, according to the same source. On the other hand, they are more likely to think that prices have risen sharply over the last twelve months (+3 points). This is “a new high point”, according to INSEE, in the context of high inflation which reached 5.7% over one year in March, including 15.9% for food products alone.

Concerning their own future financial situation, households are a little more optimistic in April, with the balance of opinion gaining three points, but the latter is almost stable concerning the past situation. The proportion of households considering it appropriate to make major purchases lost 2 points.

The opportunity to save falls but remains at a high level

A more favorable sign for consumption, the opportunity to save is down again, by 2 points, but still remains well above its long-term average. The balance of opinion on the current capacity to save is declining, but that on the future capacity has clearly improved.

Fears about the evolution of unemployment are stable and remain below their long-term average, according to INSEE.

The survey was conducted by telephone with approximately 2,000 households from March 28 to April 17.
