Frente Renovador de la Concordia secures victory in Misiones elections: Hugo Passalacqua wins second term as governor

In Misiones there were no surprises. As expected, Hugo Passalacqua swept the elections this Sunday and will govern the Mesopotamian province for the second time (I had already done it between 2015 and 2019). Passalacqua will replace at the head of the provincial Executive Oscar Herrera Ahuad, who in turn will assume as provincial deputy. The result confirms the local hegemony of the Frente Renovador de la Concordiawhich has not lost a single election since its formation, 20 years ago.

Late on Sunday night, and with just over 30 percent of the tables scrutinized, Passalacqua was imposed with 65 percent of the votes. In second place was the candidate of Together for Change, the radical deputy Martín Arjol, above 20 points. They followed him, far behind, Isaac Languageof the “Force of All” and Virginia Villanuevaof the Labor Party. The libertarians, for their part, competed without the symbols of La Libertad Avanza and scratched 1 percent. All the opposition forces together barely managed to gather half of the votes harvested by the local ruling party.

To complete the tour, the Frente Renovador de la Concordia prevailed in the 73 municipalities of the province that were in dispute. The current mayor of Posadas, Leonardo “Lalo” Stelatto, was re-elected. In El Dorado, meanwhile, one of the few alternations took place: Rodrigo “Pipo” Durán displaced the current mayor Favio Martínez. Both competed, of course, within the same pro-government front.

Since Carlos Rovira dethroned Ramon Gate In 2003, the Frente Renovador knew how to maintain a hegemony in Misiones that was proof of each election. With this Sunday, they won six consecutive elections for governor. As the provincial Constitution prevents governor and vice president from running for re-election, the alternation in surnames was imposed, although always within the same power scheme. The castling between Passalacqua and Herrera Ahuad, who succeeded each other respectively in the governor’s office and in the provincial legislature, is an example of this dynamic.

Passalacqua, 65 years old and a native of Oberá, He began his militancy at the UCR, within the youth ranks of the Purple Strip, when he studied Social Communication at the University of Salvador. He is one of the promoters of the “missionary”, the central political definition of the front, which helps it to stay away from the national armed forces, although without hiding its closeness first with the Kirchner governments and now with the Frente de Todos. His first important position was as Minister of Education and Culture of Rovira, starting in 2003. In 2015 he assumed the governorship for the first time, with more than 75 percent of the votes. The good image with which he left in office helped him to be enthroned again this year as the official candidate.

The governor-elect dedicated the victory to his political boss, “the creator of this front.” “I am sure that what is coming for Misiones is spectacular,” he celebrated. “We are not interested in what they say from Buenos Aires, we are a missionary space,” he closed, in an attempt to clear national political interpretations of the result. “We are well represented for what is to come,” added Rovira.

“I congratulate Passalacqua, who will once again have the responsibility of governing Misiones,” was the greeting that came from Peronism, by the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo “Wado” De Pedro.

After seven in the afternoon, the local government minister, Marcelo Pérez, reported that 75 percent of the 989,148 missionaries qualified to vote cast their vote. A forceful participation taking into account the torrential rain that devastated the province throughout the weekend.
