From now on it is prohibited to use unregistered electric scooters in Latvia

From January 1 this year, amendments to the Road Traffic Law come into force, which stipulate that registration of electric scooters and pedicabs is mandatory, and a state registration sticker must be affixed to their design. Existing vehicles were required to be registered by March 31, 2024, and unregistered vehicles are prohibited from driving on the road from today.

The amendments also apply to homemade or rebuilt electric scooters. Also, previously registered e-scooters must be registered under the new procedure and must receive a new registration sticker.

Electric scooter registration is carried out by the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD). The e-scooter can also be registered on the CSDD e-services platform “e-CSDD” or in person at the CSDD customer service centres.

The amendments also stipulate that electric scooter drivers under the age of 17 must wear a protective helmet, and in conditions of poor visibility or heavy traffic, clothing with reflective elements, for example, a reflective vest, is advisable.

At the same time, in order to reduce possible risks, electric scooter drivers must drive at a speed that does not threaten road safety and does not exceed the maximum permitted speed of 25 kilometers per hour (km/h).

From the beginning of this year to March 20, CSDD issued 2,439 e-scooter registration stickers, but as the end of March approached, the number of e-scooter registrations increased every day.
