“Go to work. And treat myself to something small with the money I’m saving now. Going from €270 to €49 makes a big difference for me.”

The fact that an affordable ticket for public transport is something that many people want has been clear since the 9-euro ticket at the latest. And although the new Germany ticket, which can be used from May 1st, is now a lot more expensive than its predecessor, the “49-euro ticket” can still look forward to high demand at the start of sales.

However, since opinions continue to be divided, we asked the BuzzFeed Germany community on Facebook whether they would buy the ticket and if so:

As expected, the answers to the question were quite different, which is why we picked out and sorted the basic views of the ticket:

For some people, not much will change with the introduction of the Deutschlandticket:

1. “Drive to work. Like every morning, just with a different ticket.”

-Karen S. H.

2. “What you used to do before. Waiting for late trains.”

-Chris H.

3. “I don’t even buy it. Doctor, grocery store, baker, bank, post office, work, all within a 5 to 15 minute walk. I do everything on foot or by bike.”

-Stefanie B.

However, others are already planning trips and excursions for which they previously needed an extra ticket:

4. “I have already chosen various goals. Friends and family in Soltau and Walsrode will visit again.”

“Hamburg, Lüneburg, Norddeich, Norden (city near Norddeich, my favorite thriller is set there), just drive beyond the usual borders that you usually have.”

-Kertin P.

5. “Travel Germany’s most beautiful corners.”

-Black Seaman Y.

6. “Finally no longer bothering me with thousands of transport associations and fare zones on business trips. Just get on the bus and you’re done.”

“Hoping not to catch any of the famous exceptions where the ticket is currently not valid.”

-Alexandra B.

7. “Driving to a regulars’ table in the neighboring town, for which I always had to buy an extra ticket.”

-Ulrich B.

In some cases, people also save a lot of money with the ticket, which means they can now finance other things:

8. “I drive to work, instead of €180 a month it’s only €49.90.”

-Jenny T.

9. “Driving to work. And treat myself to something small with the money I’m saving now. Going from €270 to €49 makes a big difference for me.”

10. “I drive to my grandma’s a lot more often. Three areas were just way too expensive for just an hour’s drive.”

-Saso R.

But there are also many critical voices, especially because the ticket is unlikely to be used much in rural areas due to the expandable infrastructure:

11. “Since I live 4.2 kilometers away from the nearest possible public transport and therefore have to get in the car anyway, I will forego the ticket.”

-Dennis Q.

12. “Trash can. Hardly usable effectively as a country bumpkin.”

-Stefan R.

13. “That’s why there is still no bus in my village for the early shift on Sunday, and there is also no bus after the late shift on Friday, or at the weekend or during the holiday season.”

“So 49-euro ticket – no, thanks! Expensive nonsense that is useless.”

-Kris T.

And because the ticket cannot be used on all trains, a regular ticket is still both cheaper and faster for some:

14. “Continue to use my BahnCard and take the ICE, I’ll get by better if I travel once a month…”

-Carrie P.

15. “Nothing, if ICE isn’t included, it doesn’t matter to me. Eight hours for 400 kilometers …. No thanks.”
