Global Protest Against Gaza Hospital Strike: Thousands Take to the Streets

Thousands of demonstrators came out in several cities in Muslim countries to denounce the strike against a hospital in Gaza which left at least 500 dead.

This strike was attributed by Hamas to the Israeli army, which accused the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad of being the author. The latter called these accusations lies.

From Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, to Tunis and from Kuwait City to Istanbul, via Tehran, demonstrators took to the streets in the middle of the night.

In Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, protesters gathered outside the US embassy, ​​where a fire broke out at the building’s entrance. Demonstrators threw stones and planted a Palestinian flag on the surrounding wall.

The police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

Earlier, Hezbollah called for a day of anger on Wednesday.

Also in Beirut, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the French embassy, ​​waving Palestinian flags and also throwing stones at the embassy’s main entrance.

Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati declared a day of national mourning on Wednesday.

In the occupied West Bank, thousands of Palestinians demonstrated in solidarity with the victims of Gaza.

In Ramallah, clashes broke out overnight between demonstrators demanding the departure of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and his security forces.

In Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for an end to this unprecedented violence in Gaza after the deadly strike on a hospital in this city, for which he accused the Israelis.

In the evening, a large crowd gathered in front of the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, with raised fists, shouting Allah akbar! (God is great!), the official Anadolu news agency reported.

A similar demonstration simultaneously brought together a few hundred people in front of the Israeli embassy in Ankara.

In Iran, many demonstrators took to the streets of Tehran and Qom chanting death to Israel, death to America. Rallies notably took place in front of the French and British embassies in Tehran.

Tehran called on Arab countries that have established relations with Israel to break them (the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco had signed under the aegis of President Donald Trump the normalization of their diplomatic relations with Israel).

In Tunis, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of the French embassy and condemned Israeli strikes on Gaza.

Mourning and postponed summit

The Mauritanian government declared three days of national mourning on Tuesday and called on the international community to impose an immediate end to what it calls a genocide.
