Google is rolling out native document creation and editing tools inside the Gemini application, allowing users to generate, preview, and modify files directly within their chat threads without exporting them first. As blog.google reported, the update spans multiple formats including PDFs, Google Docs, spreadsheets, presentations, code, Markdown, and text files.
Generating and Editing Files Directly in Chat
The updated interface removes the traditional friction of downloading an AI-generated file to make adjustments. Users can expand the chat experience to a full-screen view to type edits straight into the workspace. Alternatively, highlighting specific text within a document prompts Gemini to answer questions, rewrite sections, or alter visual elements on the fly.
Demonstrating the feature, Google showcased how handwritten lecture notes can be uploaded and transformed into a structured PDF study guide complete with tables, subheadings, and graphs. When a user selects specific table data and asks the model to convert it into a bar graph, the interface renders the visual update immediately. Finished files can then be exported as PDFs or saved directly to Google Drive.
Platform Limitations and Web Versus Mobile Availability
PDF preview and editing capabilities are fully functional across both mobile and web environments. However, working with Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and raw code strings is currently restricted to the web version of the application.
Digital Trends noted that this launch follows a busy month of AI developments from Google, which recently rolled out the Gemini 4 Argon model to paid subscribers and introduced the Gemini 4 Carbon model, which recently topped Artificial Analysis’ Intelligence Index. Meanwhile, Digit reported on broader ecosystem announcements made during the Google Android Dev Summit 2026, touching on developments from Android XR glasses to Gemini-powered Chrome Autofill.
Expanding Document Workflows Across the Ecosystem
The integration shifts Gemini from a conversational assistant into an active productivity environment. By keeping document iteration inside a single chat thread, users dealing with extensive reports, spreadsheets, or technical documentation can bypass the repetitive cycle of generating, downloading, and externally editing files.

Google confirmed that these document creation and refinement capabilities are now live globally for all standard Gemini app deployments.
