Habaka: Empowering Technological Talent and Fostering Innovation for Socio-Economic Development in Madagascar

(Ecofin Agency) – Habaka connects and supports the development of talents in technological fields. The Malagasy hub seeks to establish a culture of innovation to boost the socio-economic development of the country.

Initially called i-Hub before taking its new name which means “Space” in Malagasy, Habaka is a technological innovation hub that supports a community of entrepreneurs, developers and innovators. Initiated in 2011 by independent Malagasy web players and led by Princia Heliarizaka, it offers different services and programs to help the local technological community develop and flourish.

First, it offers a modern, comfortable and equipped coworking space, where technology workers can use the Internet, equipment and meet other people who share their interests and goals.

Habaka organizes and hosts events related to entrepreneurship and technology. These events are opportunities to learn new skills, share ideas and network with experts and peers. Some examples of events are Startup Weekend, barcamps, webcups, ICT cafés, etc., detailed We Are Tech Africa.

The hub also offers training on various topics, such as web development, digital marketing, graphic design and entrepreneurial skills. Habaka also runs a program called Coder Dojo, which teaches programming and creative problem solving to young people.

Also, it offers a fablab which has several equipment, including a 3D printer as well as powerful computers to allow you to custom manufacture any object/part. These different tools and accessories allow companies to prototype their products before any mass production.

Currently, Habaka has 5 communities bringing together thousands of members and which are constantly growing. Members of the hub communities work in various strategic sectors such as software engineering, machine learning, robotics, smart cities, astronomy and game development, among others.

Since 2018, Habaka has been running a project which aims to establish the Silicone Valley of Madagascar, the Hay Valley. With the help of its partners which are AfriLabs, Orange, GIZ, ArchiCONCEPT, Network Information Center Madagascar (NIC-MG) and the Center for Innovation and Scientific and Technical Documentation (CIDST), the hub supported 80 start-ups and delivered 70 practical training courses.
