The Municipal Electoral Board, responsible for the electoral process of the municipal elections this Sunday in the city of Córdoba, responded to a criminal complaint filed by the Juntos por el Cambio alliance, about alleged irregularities in the organization of these elections.
“The demonstrations carried out by a single political group a few hours before the electoral act, seeking to question the actions of the Board, simply imply an attack on the inalienable right of citizens to participate in the vote, and constitute a sneaky attempt to weaken democratic institutions,” says the official statement of the Electoral Board. That body is chaired by the former Attorney General of the province Alejandro Moyano and is made up of the members María Ester Manfredi and Diego Alberto Albornoz. While the electoral judge is Mirim Beatriz Capone, who acts as secretary of the Board.
In a brief statement and in response to the complaint filed by Juntos por el Cambio for “unclear” aspects in the progress of the electoral process, the Electoral Board defended itself.
He said that “all political parties have exercised during said process the rights that correspond to them in accordance with current regulations, there being no formal petition pending resolution.” “In order to provide peace of mind, -he continued- the Municipal Electoral Board informs the following: the invocations refer (in the complaint of Together for Change) to sections of the electoral process that were developed with absolute normality, transparency and within the framework of legality”.
Complaint and controversy
With the signature of Juan Negri, campaign manager of the candidate for mayor Rodrigo de Loredo, the opposition alliance Juntos por el Cambio filed a criminal complaint against the Municipal Electoral Board this Saturday, making various remarks about the electoral process for the municipal elections this Sunday.
One of the main questions is an ad published in the print edition of The voice of this Saturday in which the Municipal Electoral Board clarified in a striking way that “NO (in capital letters) they will impose fines for not going to vote”, which was interpreted by the opposition as an aid to Peronism due to the relative weight of the structure of the ruling party over the total number of voters. If fewer people go to vote, according to the interpretation of Together for Change, the relative portion of the PJ apparatus grows.
In this regard, the head of the campaign of Together for Change, assured: “The publication in the media of the Electoral Board where they emphasize that there will be no sanctions against citizens who do not go to vote, is a clear maneuver designed by the ruling party so that society does not participate. A true affront to democracy on its 40th anniversary”.
A source from the Electoral Board admitted to this medium that it was “an error” to have made this clarification in the institutional notice through which an attempt was made to report the documents authorized to be able to vote tomorrow and showing the Single Voting Ballot (BUS) with which the vote will be taken this Sunday.
In this regard, even the campaign manager of the ruling party (We Make United for Córdoba), Héctor “Pichi” Campana, spoke out against this official publication of the Junta.
“As the campaign manager of Hacemos Unidos por Córdoba, I want to express our total repudiation of this confusing by the Electoral Board. The most affected by the low participation are us, without a doubt. We ask the people of Cordoba to vote and express themselves at the polls,” said the president of the Córdoba Sports Agency.
Beyond the controversy over the Board’s notice, which was nationalized because it was replicated by media portals across the country, Together for Change made several warnings in its criminal complaint.
The opposition assured that “the polling station authorities have not yet been confirmed, despite the fact that by law they must be notified 20 days before the date of the elections. (Article 18 inc. J of Ordinance 10,073)”.
On this point, the Electoral Board assured La Voz that the polling station authorities are confirmed, but that there were only difficulties in 50 cases (in more than 3,200 polling stations) that were resolved this Saturday morning.
Another issue criticized by the opposition was that the addresses of the presidents were not taken into account to designate the table authorities, who in some cases, go to areas far away from their private homes.
The Board recognized this problem, but it was argued that “there was no material time” to locate each table authority near their homes.
Juntos por el Cambio also questioned that although the Turing system, which had many problems in the past provincial elections, was terminated, the municipality rehired the company Ocasa-MSA, which received many objections in the provisional scrutiny of the provincial elections on June 25.
When asked by this medium, the Electoral Board unofficially argued that when the Board was formed, these companies had already been hired to carry out the entire electoral process.
