Health reports seven deaths and 377 people hospitalized by COVID-19

The Health Department reported today, Sunday, seven new deaths from COVID-19bringing to 4,310 the total number of victims attributed to the pandemic since March 2020.

Through a tweet, the agency explained that three of the deceased were not vaccinated, another two had received only two doses of the drug and the last two had completed their vaccination cycle (including booster doses).

Not counting these deaths, so far in May there have been 86 deaths from COVID-19. The month of April closed with 42 deaths.

The daily average of deaths amounts to four. However, the doctor and biostatistician rafael irizarry warned that an average of five daily deaths from COVID-19 could begin to register in Puerto Rico if the rate of the reported increase that began on March 15 is maintained.

“Although the lethality (of the omicron variant that is predominant, the BA.2) is lower, Since there are so many cases, there will be more deaths.” held in an interview with The new day.

Since the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA, in English) authorized the use of vaccines against COVID-19, the scientific and medical community affirmed that the drug did not prevent infection with the virus, but it did reduce the chances of suffering from severe symptoms and death.

Overall, in the last 30 days: 24 deaths in unvaccinated people, 49 deaths in vaccinated people, and 47 deaths in booster vaccinated people have been reported.

On the other hand, Health reported that the total number of patients hospitalized for the virus rose to 377, which represents 25 additional patients in the past 24 hours. The number breaks down into 327 adults and 50 pediatrics.

The preliminary positivity rate, updated at 6:00 am, was placed at 30.08%, similar to the 30.16% reported at noon yesterday, Saturday.

The percentage continues to move away from the 5% recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and 3% who prefer local experts to keep the virus under control.

Health will update other data related to the progress of the pandemic at noon.
