The insolvency of Hellweg Die Profi-Baumärkte GmbH in Austria has reached its final chapter, as the Sanierungsverwalter petitioned the Landesgericht Linz on Wednesday for the formal closure of the remaining corporate entities, including the central administrative headquarters in Linz. This decision follows the collapse of negotiations with a prospective investor who had initially considered acquiring the final four operating retail locations.
The Collapse of Investor Talks and the Final Linz Shutdown
Hopes for a last-minute rescue of Hellweg’s remaining footprint in Austria vanished this week when buyout talks fell through. Consequently, the insolvency administrator filed for the closure of the Linz headquarters and any remaining structural elements. Wolfgang Gerstmayer, managing director of the GPA trade union in Upper Austria, addressed the human toll in a public statement, noting that the organization stands firmly “at the side of those affected and will support and advise them through the next steps.” The wind-down of inventory across the affected divisions is slated to wrap up over the coming weeks.
The closure of the Linz corporate office impacts 17 administrative employees. This operational halt follows the earlier shuttering of all retail storefronts under the Austrian subsidiary. The brand’s restructuring began earlier this year when the German parent company filed for insolvency on June 16, 2026, and a restructuring proceeding with self-administration was opened at the Landesgericht Linz on June 30, 2026.
Financial Liabilities and the Creditors’ Acceptanc of the Restructuring Plan
According to credit protection agencies, Hellweg’s Austrian subsidiary accumulated total liabilities amounting to 23.88 million euros, leaving roughly 280 creditors affected. To settle these debts, the company proposed a statutory minimum quota of 30 percent.
That exact payout threshold cleared a major hurdle when creditors voted unanimously to accept the restructuring plan on Friday. Under the terms, the company must deposit the promised 30 percent quota funds by October 31. At the inception of the restructuring proceedings back in June, the DIY chain operated six retail branches supported by 165 total employees.
A Dismantling of the Retail Network Across Austria
The final corporate shutdown in Linz follows a retreat from the Austrian market. The company’s retail network had already seen severe reductions prior to Wednesday’s filing. On August 12, separate closure proceedings hit two Styrian locations in Graz-Raaba and Fürstenfeld, affecting 44 workers after an interested buyer saw no perspective for continuation, prompting a clearance auction for remaining inventory starting September 7.
Meanwhile, the last four operating retail outposts—located in Ried im Innkreis and Kirchdorf an der Krems in Upper Austria, Straßwalchen in Salzburg, and Graz-Eggenberg in Styria—faced their own closure requests filed at the Landesgericht Linz on Monday. These four locations had accounted for 116 jobs. While the retail floors are winding down, specific internal divisions governing market management and fire safety were initially carved out from the closure petition to ensure site safety during asset liquidation.
With the headquarters now following the retail branches into history, the presence of the German hardware chain in Austria comes to a close. Creditors await the October 31 payment deadline as the final liquidation of inventory takes place under court supervision.
