Land hermit crabs and Australian cockroaches act as unexpected external and internal seed dispersers for the parasitic plant Balanophora fungosa in the coastal forests of Ishigaki Island near Okinawa, Japan, according to a study published by Kobe University botanist Suetsugu Kenji in the journal Ecology.

For hikers exploring the humid, coastal forests near Okinawa, Balanophora fungosa easily mimics a simple forest-floor mushroom. Possessing dark caps and a non-photosynthetic lifestyle devoid of chlorophyll, these parasitic plants extract essential nutrients directly from the root systems of neighboring trees. Each yeasty-smelling specimen generates up to one million tiny, dry-fruited seeds. Traditional botanical assumptions held that these seeds simply fell via gravity or drifted on faint air currents. However, according to Kobe University botanist Suetsugu Kenji, reported by Popular Science, the humid and virtually windless forest floor renders aeolian and gravitational dispersal highly implausible.

Suetsugu initially suspected that ants operated as the primary dispersal vector. The plant displays dull colors, emits a distinct yeasty aroma, and produces easily detachable fruits tailored for smaller mandibulate insects. To test this hypothesis, the research team deployed mesh exclusion barriers designed to let tiny ants pass while blocking larger fauna. As detailed in coverage by Mongabay, the fruits inside those ant-only enclosures remained entirely untouched. Gravity was not doing the work, and ants were not taking the bait.

To capture the actual agents responsible, Suetsugu positioned a waterproof digital camera roughly 20 centimeters away from the target plants. Programmed to log exposures every 50 seconds, the device compiled 6,427 images across an 89-hour monitoring window. The footage exposed a nocturnal shift: land hermit crabs, specifically Coenobita brevimanus, and Australian cockroaches (Periplaneta australasiae) descending upon the flora under the cover of darkness.

The hermit crabs utilized their pincers to scrape off the fruits, occasionally stripping an entire plant bare overnight. According to findings published in Ecology and highlighted by Popular Science, these crustaceans carried an average of 86 fruits externally on their claws, transporting them up to 328 feet away from the parent organism. Furthermore, ingestion tests confirmed that viable seeds survived passage through the crustacean digestive tracts, culminating in defecation across the forest floor.
Redefining Ecological Roles in Island Habitats
Mongabay noted that while the Australian cockroach also excreted viable seeds, their yield of intact internal seeds lagged behind that of the hermit crabs. This discovery establishes the first empirical evidence that land hermit crabs operate simultaneously as external and internal seed vectors. Suetsugu noted in his findings that these organisms are traditionally categorized as omnivores, scavengers, or seed predators rather than potential plant partners.
The volatile compounds driving this interaction appear to be olfactory. Mature Balanophora fungosa specimens emit a fermented, yeasty scent that acts as a direct beacon for ground-dwelling invertebrates. Because large vertebrates dominate traditional seed-dispersal literature, small-bodied invertebrates on shaded island forest floors have historically escaped close observation. This biological mechanism demonstrates that familiar coastal scavengers maintain complex ecological dependencies that remain hidden simply because researchers fail to watch them closely enough.
