The Ukrainian ambassador has no understanding of Mützenich’s term “freezing”. And historians from the SPD around Heinrich August Winkler criticize the party’s course. They choose drastic words.
DThe SPD is currently trying to dispel doubts about its unconditional support for Ukraine in the war against the Russian aggressor. But the discussion about whether it is taking a dubious course as a “peace party” is difficult for the Social Democrats to end. There is continued criticism of the attitude and choice of words of leading SPD politicians from outside as well as from parts of the party itself. This applies to parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich, but also to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. On Wednesday, Ukraine’s ambassador, Oleksii Makeyev, spoke out against Mützenich’s suggestion of “freezing” the war.
“Freezing is not a good word,” Makejew said on Deutschlandfunk. The suggestion met with “no understanding” from him. It would mean allowing millions of Ukrainians in the Russian-occupied areas of his country to continue to be “tortured and raped and expelled” by the Russian occupiers. This would mean that Ukraine and the whole world would stand idly by and watch a “genocide”. Since the war in the east of the country began in 2014, Ukraine has negotiated a settlement with Russia in more than 200 meetings. “But this freeze has only led to a huge war raging in Europe,” the ambassador said.
