Holy Saturday Bath – Diario de Yucatán

MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— One of the most memorable dates that Catholics and Christians wait for with great devotion is Holy Saturday, as they mourn the crucifixion of Christ, who died on the cross to save humanity from their sins while waiting for his resurrection, which is the materialization of the victory of life over death.

Beyond the feeling of mourning and the reflections that the date entails, it is not unusual to see people on the street getting wet and throwing water at anyone who passes by as part of a tradition that is now prohibited, but does not completely disappear.

Getting wet on Holy Saturday is one of the best-known traditions among Catholics and comes from ancient times.

Water has always been a symbol of purification, so, under this concept, the Church previously prohibited its parishioners from bathing during Holy Week as part of mourning for the death of Jesus.

It was Holy Saturday when the faithful were allowed to use water to cleanse their soul of sins when bathing.

This date also used to be used to carry out collective baptisms, in which too many people came to receive the sacrament and among so many people, the priests resorted to throwing water to reach as many people as possible and speed up the process.

As the catholic.net portal highlights, this day also serves to remember the baptismal concepts by lighting the candle that is carried when receiving the sacrament. The custom of getting wet over the years evolved until it reached the popular custom of throwing water at people on the street with buckets or water balloons, which degenerated more into a game or celebration, far from the feeling of mourning.

Due to the scarcity of water, the authorities warn every year about the penalties for those caught wasting water on Holy Saturday. Waste of water is prohibited by law.
