A local police department received a call on Saturday evening around 7:00 p.m. reporting that a child had been struck by a car on a pedestrian crossing. The girl, who was seriously injured, passed away during the night at the emergency room. The initial police investigation revealed that it was not a traffic accident. Two family members of the victim, a 43-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man, were arrested by the police. The details surrounding the incident are still under investigation. On Saturday evening around 7:00 p.m., local police received a call reporting that a child had been run over on a pedestrian crossing by a fleeing car.
The girl, seriously injured, had been taken to the emergency room where she died during the night.
The first elements of the police investigation were however able to formally rule out any road accident.
“The investigation is still ongoing, but I can however confide that two people have been arrested,” said Kato Belmans, spokesperson for the Antwerp prosecutor’s office.
The family of the victim had indicated that the child had been knocked down by a car, which had fled at high speed, according to his relatives.
But no one was however able to give a description of the vehicle, and no witness had attended the scene described.
According to the police, no road accident actually occurred.
