Research has shown that limiting the use of e-cigarette liquids with various flavors, such as fruits and desserts, can reduce e-cigarette use among adolescents. Since adolescents have a low preference for tobacco flavored or unflavored liquids, banning only sweet liquids can induce e-cigarette smoking cessation.

The Ohio State University Professor Alena Tackett’s research team published the results of the study on the 4th (local time) in the international journal ‘Alcohol and Drug Journal’.

The United States is a country with a high rate of e-cigarette use among youth. According to a paper published in the international academic journal ‘New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM)’ in 2020, as of 2019, 27% of American high school students were using or had used e-cigarettes. Although each state in the United States regulates the minimum age for purchasing e-cigarettes at 19 to 21 years old, it is known that e-cigarettes are introduced to teenagers online or through retail stores and acquaintances.

The research team conducted a survey of 1414 adolescents and adults aged 14 to 21 in the United States. Within 30 days of responding to the survey, all respondents were asked to use e-cigarettes at least once.

The research team speculated that adolescents and young adults might prefer sweeter-tasting liquids than older adults.

When asked whether they would continue to use e-cigarettes if only tobacco and menthol flavors were legally permitted among tobacco, menthol, mint, fruit, and dessert flavors, 38.8% of respondents answered that they would stop using e-cigarettes. If cigarette flavor were the only option, 70.8% of respondents said they would not use e-cigarettes. The research team explained, “The younger the respondents, the more sensitive they were to the ban on fruit or sweet-tasting liquids.”

The research team also added that adolescents and young adults who previously used liquids containing a cool ‘cooling’ scent would be able to see a high smoking cessation effect when the scent of the liquid was restricted. E-liquids that mix flavors and fruity flavors that make you feel refreshed in your mouth are popular among e-cigarette e-cigarettes.

Professor Tackett, who led the study, said, “The results of this survey showed that fruity or sweet flavored e-liquids aroused continued interest in e-cigarettes among adolescents.” “It is unknown how high the anti-smoking effect of restricting some liquids will actually be, but since the cost of implementing these policies is not high, policy makers need to pay attention and look into them,” he said.
