Sometimes senior Russian politicians say that Ukraine should become entirely Russian, sometimes they talk about dividing the country between Russia, Poland, Romania and Hungary. What is that supposed to mean?

ADmitry Medvedev described the proposals to end the war against Ukraine, which he recently published on Telegram, as a “soft Russian peace formula”. The deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council and former president and prime minister envisages the “complete and unconditional surrender of the former ‘Ukraine'” as the first point of his plan. According to his idea, the “peace formula” should lead to the self-dissolution of the Ukrainian state and the international recognition of the entire Ukraine as Russian territory.

Such statements from Medvedev are not surprising, as he was the first member of the Russian leadership to identify Ukraine as the culprit after the Islamic terrorist attack on the Crocus City Hall near Moscow. He has often referred to Kiev as a “Russian city”. At the beginning of March, during an appearance at a youth forum in Sochi, he said that the idea that Ukraine was something other than Russia had to “go away forever”: “Ukraine is undoubtedly Russia.”
