Up to 10 hours: how the law that allows the closure of streets or passages will work

This Monday, President Sebastián Piñera promulgated the law that allows the closure of streets and passages, providing greater security to the residents of the area.

in conversation with 24 AM, the Undersecretary for Crime Prevention, María José Gómez, He pointed out that as a government “we are very happy to have this law, which is a longing for the communities”.

In addition, he pointed out that “it makes the current regulations more flexible and makes it easier for organized neighbors to take security measures to have a greater sense of tranquility in their territories”.

“For us this law has a profound sense of territorial equity, because any organized community will be able to take measures to improve security“, he added.

Regarding the law itself, Gómez stressed that it improves what exists today, establishing parameters and providing greater flexibility for the arrangement and implementation of the closure.

“In this new law the requirements that must be presented to the municipal council of the commune, which is the one that has to approve your application, are established“, he pointed.

For the motion, “80% of the neighbors must agree“, percentage that was modified, since the current regulations establish that it must be 90%.

In addition, the authority indicated that “before only blind passages could be closed, now you can close streets and passages that have entrance and exit, that are less than 7 meters wide“.

However, the new law also details that said space can be closed for 7 to 10 hours, at a time to be agreed and that represents a greater danger for the community, the neighbors deciding at what time it is applied.

Finally, the authority explained that the closure of streets or passages “it can never hinder the transit of people and the passage of emergency vehicles”.

Regarding the criticisms raised by the project, since in the end it does not put a stop to violence, but only protects an organized group of people who live in certain conditions, Gómez reinforced the idea that “This is a contribution. These are measures and commitments that all institutions have to take.”

“Last year, crimes with a greater social connotation fell, as did violent crimes. It is a priority that worries and occupies us, the feeling of insecurity of people,” he asserted, arguing that it has increased due to three factors: drug trafficking , the existence of criminal gangs and the use of firearms.
