– I get deeply distressed every time someone talks as if the war started February 24, 2022

This is a discussion post. The post is an expression of the writer’s own position.

UKRAINE: 24 February 2024 marks two years since Putin ordered the grand invasion of Ukraine.

With the clear goal of exterminating Ukraine as an independent state – to exterminate everything Ukrainian.

I can only guess what the purpose was of all the transportable crematoria that were with the invasion troops.

The Z-troops expected to be greeted with flowers, so the crematoria were probably not meant to burn their own casualties.

It looked like an attempt at “Endlösung version 2022”.

The war against Ukraine has almost lasted 10 years. I get both deeply distraught and incredibly angry every time I hear journalists and others talk as if the war started on February 24, 2022. And unfortunately that is more the rule than the exception in the Danish media.

See for yourself how many places February 24th is designated as the 2nd anniversary of the war. I have written many words about Putin since 1999 and Ukraine mostly since October 2013. Just imagine if someone had spoken out against Putin and his kleptocratic rule in 1999 when he had his own apartment blocks blown up to have a good reason to attack Chechnya .

The family’s and my good friend, Magomed, was then a Chechen soldier in Grozny.

It was then that I wrote the poetry collection Aktindsigt, which was published in a Danish/Russian edition in 2002. It was used as a gift for Anna Politkovskaja when she was in Denmark in 2004 to receive a peace prize. Anna was killed on October 7, 2006, shot down by a hit squad on Putin’s birthday.

Big kudos to the Russians

In 2018, in connection with the World Cup in football in Russia, I wrote “Der er Helte”, which was described as a hybrid book of poems, essays and chronicles.

It was then that our (also mine) old football hero, Peter Schmeichel, went to Putin’s service as a commentator on RT, but not even that got the Danish journalists to the keys. And the World Cup was covered with great praise for the Russians, even as Russian shells and Grad missiles rained down on Ukrainian territory, killing scores while soccer was being played.

Ukraine needs our support, it cannot be fair that we are talking about war fatigue.

On my bulletin board I have a series of names with crosses and dates, they are Ukrainian contacts who have been killed in the war, artists that I have followed. They have paid the ultimate price as we speak of war weariness.

Ukraine must win the war or we all lose. Since the Berlin Wall was breached, we have reaped the peace dividend so many times that we must rearm now. This was said by a writer who in 1983 stood on stage several times at Culture for Peace in Odense.

I will end with a part of the poem from my book, “Flere Blade fra min KrigsDigtDagbog”, which will be published on February 24, 2024.

“If Ukraine wins the war/ then your grandfather/ was one of those/ who took a stand/ and worked for/ our freedom,/ and Ukraine’s freedom in Europe./ Let your parents/ tell about Magomed/ whom your parents have met,/ he was a Chechen soldier in Grozny/ when grandfather wrote Aktinsigt,/ then we should have stopped Putin.

If Russia wins the war/ then your grandfather/ is one of those you are wisest/ to forget. ”
