The Internal Affairs Service of the Security Forces on Thursday night proceeded to arrest of four persons. A doctor, two pharmaceutical visitors and a foreigner of Pakistani origin. A case file was filed against them for – as the case may be – bribery of an employee by continuation and by profession, false certification and falsification by continuation, breach of duty by continuation, complicity in bribery of an employee, bribery of an employee by complicity and for violation of the Arms Act and the immigration code.
The arrested persons were taken to the Amaliada prosecutor’s office the day before yesterday, are being held at the Ilias Police Department and are expected to be taken to the investigator, in order to apologize for their actions.
THE COMPLAINT
The investigation of the case began after a complaint which stated that the doctor, who works at the Varda Health Center, systematically issued false medical certificates to foreigners for a fee, in order for them to ensure their legal stay in our country. In fact, the information of “P” states that in 2022 alone it had issued approximately 3,000 opinions of this kind.
THE FOREIGNER
The foreigner who was arrested was allegedly the one who mediated between the foreigners who needed the document in question and the doctor. He was the one who gave the data to the doctor, made the opinions and then delivered them to the interested parties for a pre-agreed fee. Foreigners used these certificates as proof of residence permit.
THE MEDICAL VISITORS
At the same time, the accused doctor allegedly received sums of money or other unfair benefits to prescribe pharmaceutical preparations of specific companies. In this way, the medical visitors in turn obtained a percentage of profit from the sales of the companies’ drugs, burdening the National Health Service Provision Organization and damaging the Greek State.
In the context of the operation of the Internal Affairs Service of the Security Forces that took place at the doctor’s workplace, the two medical visitors were located at the time they would hand the doctor an amount of money for the over-prescription of their company’s pharmaceutical preparations. According to EOPYY, the doctor, in the last year, had increased the prescription of a certain pharmaceutical company’s preparations by 60%, having also the highest rates of prescription of uninsured patients in the prefecture where he is based.
THE FINDINGS
Also, from the searches carried out in the house where the foreigner lived, passports of third parties, which he possessed illegally, were found, as well as medical certificates in the name of foreigners, which had been issued by the accused doctor.
In total, from the physical and house searches, the following were found and seized:
• -3,870- euros,
• -4- passports of third parties,
• -2- medical certificates,
• -1- crossbow and
• a number of white, obviously used, envelopes.
At the same time, it was found that travel agencies had a credit of 8,200 euros from various pharmaceutical companies in the name of the doctor, which he had spent on travel.
PRESIDENT OF THE AMALIADAS MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
In a communication that “P” had with the president of the Medical Association of Amaliada, Konstantinos Tsaousis, he told us: “As the president of the Medical Association, I sought information, because the case concerns a member of our Association. We do not have detailed and official information yet, but from what has been announced by the competent authorities, it appears that the colleague has carried out illegal acts, such as issuing medical certificates and over-prescribing. This is also the reason he is being held and will be brought before the investigator.”
The information indicates that the investigation by the Internal Affairs Service of the Security Forces continues into the involvement of another doctor. The same information states that the further investigation of this case is expected to bring to the surface other connections, as well as illegal acts.
