In Mexico it is urgent to have more specialists in internal medicine

This Friday, the Santander Performing Arts Ensemble (CSAE) held the Institutional Cooperation Forum “Perspectives of medical education with relevance and quality: Innovation, Technology and Professionalism”, within the framework of the XXll International Congress Advances in Medicine (CIAM 2022), Civil Hospital of Guadalajara.

The Vice President of the National Academy of Education, Dr. Marcela González de Cossio, participated with the theme: “National System of Medical Residencies, Educational Offer and Prevalent Model: response to needs, opportunities and challenges”

He said that the main causes of mortality had not changed much since 2018 in Mexico; however, there was an increase due to COVID-19, which is already among the main causes. Until November 1, 2021, more than 3.8 million infections had been registered, and almost 290 thousand deaths caused by this virus. Low testing rates mask full impact of pandemic, document says Health Outlook 2021: OECD Indicators Summary for Mexico.

“Of all these causes of death, we continue to have smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity at the top of the problem,” he emphasized.

He explained that, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), our country had a population of more than 120 million people, but with a total of 147 thousand 910 specialists, that is, 119 for every 100 thousand population; one of the causes is the educational offer we have and its study plan, he said.

“For example, in the last century internal medicine lasted three years; then they decided to increase it to four and today it lasts five, and when you want to see the plus that we are giving to that, we cannot find it, (…) We need to be more humble and understand that lengthening the formation does not help, because we see that the number of doctors with a specialty is not enough, and this may be due to the years of study that it demands,” he stressed.

González de Cossio said that the lack of teacher training and the use of new technologies are other causes of the problem “The challenges are teacher training and certification. You have to recognize the work they do from the teaching point of view, and it is easier for them to do it happily and with recognition”, he said.

Increasing the training of residents and ensuring decent labor treatment for them, as well as incorporating and sharing strategies and experiences among academics, are some of the options proposed by González de Cossio to solve the problem. “Because they are very valuable resources, and if there is something we lack right now, it is resources for all of us, we have to think that we are all here and we all need each other,” he concluded.
