72% of independent businesses are feeling the effects of inflation and rising energy costs on their business.

Independent shops: only solution, increase prices

According to the first Independent Trade Observatory produced by Ankorstore in partnership with the French Trade Council, independent traders encounter many difficulties linked to price inflation, in particular despite their perseverance.

Direct consequence of this situation: a reduction in the average basket and in store visits. More broadly, less than half of merchants surveyed (44%) saw an increase in their turnover over the past year.

Merchants who remain confident

Faced with these difficulties, 58% of traders plan to increase their prices this year, a proportion significantly higher than the 8% recorded in the winter of 2022. This difference shows a considerable gap. Currently, 82% of independent traders believe that their situation is very tense, even extremely difficult, compared to 72% last winter, already a worrying figure in itself.

Paradoxically, 68% of independent traders nevertheless remain confident about the health of the sector for the year 2023. This confidence can be explained in particular by the fact that 50% of French people consider access to a more local offer as an added value. independent trade, and this in relation to mass distribution or e-commerce.
