Inflation: Coffee, milk, sugar… These products whose price is exploding in Europe

Coffee prices in the European Union rose by an average of 16.9% in August compared to the same period in 2021, the EU’s statistical office, Eurostat, said in a statement on Thursday.

“Recent price hikes could make this morning staple almost a luxury”underlines the institute, also noting a jump in the price of sugar and milk.

Fresh whole milk now costs 24.3% more on average than a year ago, skimmed milk is up 22.2% in price.

According to Eurostat, the price of these products has increased in all the countries of the European Union, with the exception of Malta where the price of skimmed milk has remained unchanged.

Finland and Lithuania recorded the largest variations in coffee prices with respective increases of 43.6% and 39.9%, followed by Sweden and Estonia.

The average price of sugar soared by 33.4%. Poland recorded an increase of 109.2% compared to August 2021.

Inflation in the euro zone accelerated in September to reach 10%, a level unprecedented since the creation of the single currency.
