France has been affected, since the death of young Nahel, killed by a policeman after refusing to comply, by numerous riots which have set the country ablaze. Videos of this urban violence go around the world and worry foreign tourists who end up canceling their trip. According to travel companies, 10% of tourist reservations canceled in France.

One of the consequences of the riots that have hit the country for several days after the death of Nahel, killed by a police officer after a refusal to comply. And it is even more noticeable in luxury tourism, which represents a large part of the activity in France. For the occasion, Europe 1 went to Eluxfrance, a luxury travel agency, to see the damage.
Cancellations despite cancellation fees
For this travel agency alone, 17% of reservations have been canceled since the start of the riots. Customers, terrified by the images broadcast on a loop in their country, prefer to cancel, regardless of the amount of the costs. “We have the example of a family of four, Californians who were due to come in less than 15 days and who have decided to cancel even though they will have very high cancellation costs and which will approach 10,000 euros”, underlines Frédéric de Coral, the co-founder of Elux France These costs include accommodation and activities planned on site.
But who are these customers? “It is mainly about cancellations from foreign visitors, Americans, English, Germans. These are more tourists who go to high-end hotels who spend a lot during their stay. So it will be noticeable on the the entire tourist economy in July”, deplores Jean-Pierre Mas, president of travel companies. As for reservations for the end of the summer, they are already suffering. Eluxfrance recorded a drop of almost 50% compared to the same period last year.
