On October 3, 2023, the face of the man who would be called “Mohamed” was found in all the media in Belgium following a call for witnesses launched by the Liège judicial authorities.

The man was clearly designated as the perpetrator of a rape committed on November 6, 2018 in Herstal, on a young Herstalian.

According to the victim, Mohamed, whom she knew from having chatted with him on social networks, approached her while she was waiting for the bus. The young woman then got into her car. Once in Herstal, he locked the doors and raped her.

The suspect heard

The young woman filed a complaint in April 2023, almost five years after the events. She was also the one who provided two photos of her alleged attacker: one from her Facebook profile and another taken, apparently, at the Saint-Lambert shopping mall in Liège.

With these simple elements, the Liège justice system launched a national call for witnesses in order to identify the wanted individual. In just a few hours, the federal police switchboard exploded with phone calls. Everyone recognized the individual who was in Spain for his first day of vacation.

Also overwhelmed by messages and phone calls, the suspect immediately came forward via his lawyer. He couldn’t believe his face was in all the newspapers and he proclaimed his innocence in a case which, according to him, did not concern him at all.

The suspect indicated that at the time of the attack, he was not in Herstal but in another town and that he had the idea of taking photos there.

Last Tuesday, October 17, the suspect was finally heard, in Salduz 3 without deprivation of liberty, by the bloodhounds of the judicial brigade of the Liège police. He repeated that he did not know the victim and had never seen her. The victim, whose sexual assault is not questioned by anyone, was unfortunately unable to produce the famous conversation between her and the suspect on social networks. She also failed to remember the make of her attacker’s car. On the other hand, it was she who gave investigators the photos published in the call for witnesses. One was taken on the suspect’s Facebook profile and the other in the Saint-Lambert galleries. If the suspect clearly recognizes himself in the photo where he is taken from the front, it is certain that it is not him in the second photo.

His photo gallery to save him

Still from a good source, we learn that the suspect indicated that at the time of the attack, he was not in Herstal but in another town and that he had the idea of taking photos there. The photo gallery on his phone provides precise locations and times. Ubiquity not being an option, he was either in Herstal or elsewhere. At the end of his hearing, which was quite quick, he left free to move around.

Investigators from the judicial brigade of the Liège police will have to clarify this matter. If no one questions the attack on the young woman, it is also possible that the photos in the call for witnesses are not the correct ones. To the pain of a rape victim who cannot be discussed, we should not add that of a man wrongly accused of rape.
