Apple does not particularly facilitate the repair of its iPhones – at least not systematically. The specialized repairs and spare parts platform gave the iPhone 15 a score of 4/10 in terms of ease of repair.
A few days earlier, iFixit downgraded the iPhone 14 rating from 7 to 4/10. Identical scores for identical problems: the software constraints placed by Apple severely complicate device repairs, which harms consumers – and contradicts the 2021 anti-waste law.
A “vast strategy” brought to light
Software locks force customers to go through Apple to change a part of their iPhone. Without this, the device may show signs of malfunction or display worrying alerts. Other parts work but only partially, restricted by the famous lock.
“Little by little, the glitches and bugs accumulated and revealed a vast strategy, a systematic plan aimed at requiring authorization from Apple to carry out any iPhone repair”, summarizes iFixit. The problem concerns many iPhone models and a growing number of parts: screen, battery, rear cameras, etc.
An ongoing investigation in France
In addition to Apple customers, independent repairers are also penalized by this strategy, which prevents the use of generic parts or the reuse of used iPhone components. These repairers are offered official parts at prohibitive prices when approved repairers obtain them at a lower cost.
This case is unique in the smartphone industry, according to The Repair Academy cited by The world. Legal action is also underway.
