In an article published by the German newspaper Die Welt, Christine Kenshi revealed that reports from Western intelligence agencies and investigators showed that Tehran had been working for several years to expand its influence, through a global network of militias that it supports militarily, financially and technically to exploit them, in its fight against the West in general and against the United States and Israel in particular
This network extended to the Polisario, sheltered by Algeria, considered the most striking example of Tehran’s expansionist approach. We understand why this armed group withdrew from the UN-sponsored ceasefire in 1991, only to resume fighting against the Kingdom in 2020.
Morocco previously revealed that Iran had provided Polisario members with surface-to-air missiles and drones and had established camps in Algeria where it still trains mercenaries.
In 2018, Morocco severed relations with Iran over this support for separatists. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, then declared that Hezbollah “had sent military representatives to the Polisario Front, had provided it with weapons and had trained it in urban warfare”.
The leaders of the Polisario Front and Hezbollah have denied the accusations, while Moroccan authorities have confirmed that they are in possession of an important file including detailed reports and satellite images of meetings between Hezbollah and Polisario representatives in Algeria.
Morocco had specified that Iran had also contributed to the organization of meetings between the Polisario and Hezbollah through its embassy in Algeria. The confirmation would come from the separatists themselves since one of their representatives declared last year that Iran was providing them, via Algerian mediation, with “kamikaze” drones that they could use against Morocco.
New intelligence reports confirm the authenticity of the Moroccan reports. Die Welt obtained recordings and transcripts of telephone conversations between representatives of the Polisario and an agent who claims to be a contact of Hezbollah from Ivory Coast named Mustafa Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kitab, who is the liaison officer of the Polisario in Syria and responsible for the Middle East.
The Polisario has grown in importance for Tehran since the signing of the Abraham Accords. It has become the main axis of Iran’s attempts to destabilize North Africa.
At the beginning of the year, Die Welt revealed the existence of a fund transfer network operating from Spain and the Tindouf camps in Algeria and maintaining close contacts with the Polisario, Iran, Lebanon and Hezbollah.
The newspaper also added that Iran hides its financial aid to Hezbollah and Hamas, and perhaps also the Polisario, through cash flows that are almost impossible to trace.
