“Is Appointment-based System Here to Stay? How the Pandemic Has Changed Reservations for Hairdressers, Cinemas, and Swimming Pools”

During the pandemic, health measures have multiplied. In particular, we had to make an appointment to go to the hairdresser, the cinema, to go to the swimming pool or even to access our bank. Despite the end of these measures, it would seem that the system is now entrenched in our lives. Some establishments continue to apply this rule.

Lionel now systematically makes an appointment before going to have his hair cut. His hairdresser Luciano has decided to maintain this operation since the covid crisis: “It was imposed on us and then I adopted it, since it allows us to plan our day well.“.

While some customers were reluctant at first, they are now familiar with the system. Lionel sees advantages in this: “It makes it easier to juggle between work and hobbies and to be able to come to the hairdresser without waiting two hours on a chair”.

Same principle at the Grand Large swimming pool in Mons, reservation is compulsory. “It’s perfect for me, that way we’re sure to have room”said a swimmer.

“I prefer to come when it suits me. Booking is organizing and I’m not organized”launches another person.

The swimming pool was already considering setting up the system before the pandemic, but the covid accelerated things. “The reservation allows us to keep control over the number of swimmers, depending on the availability of the lanes, it actually avoids having overloads”explains Stéphanie Beer, the communication manager.

Less positive, the phenomenon of no show. These are appointments left empty. They would concern 25% of reservations, according to the neutral union of independents
