The city of Munich has dismissed the chief conductor of its Philharmonic from his post because he has shown a certain closeness to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past.

The city of Munich has dismissed the chief conductor of its Philharmonic from his post because he has shown a certain closeness to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past. And because Gergiev did not want to expressly distance himself from the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, as demanded by Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) in the ultimatum. Upon request, the city announced that the details of the dismissal were currently being clarified, and that more could not be said at the moment.
