Agence France-Presse reports,JerusalemMarwa Taha Abu Rani, manager of a hotel in the old city, said, “We felt that the number of tourists just started to improve at the end of September and early October (last year).” However, after the outbreak of the Israel-Kazakhstan war, reservations were canceled one after another. “We have nothing to do now…no one is around.”

The economy of the mountain town of Nazareth in northern Israel has always relied heavily on Christians who come for pilgrimage, so it is regarded as a bellwether for Israel’s overall tourism industry. Now, even by off-season standards, the city is unusually empty.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the tourism industry accounts for approximately 3% of the Israeli economy, and the industry directly employs approximately 200,000 Israeli employees.

The Ministry of Tourism mentioned that Israel originally expected to attract 5.5 million tourists in 2023, 1 million more than the record high in 2019.

But on October 7 last year, everything changed.

According to AFP statistics based on official statistics, Hamas’s raids killed about 1,160 Israelis, most of them civilians; the Gaza Health Ministry stated that Israel’s retaliatory bombings and ground attacks have killed at least 27,840 Palestinians. People died, mostly women, children and teenagers.

After the Hamas attack, many foreign tourists immediately gave up their plans to visit Israel, and airlines canceled flights to the area, making the situation worse. Many tour guides, hotel industry employees, bus drivers, etc. lost their jobs.

The Ministry of Tourism stated that as of the end of 2023, only about 3 million people had visited Israel throughout the year.

Michel Strawczynski, an economist at Hebrew University, said that Israel’s past two major wars ended in less than two months, so the economic impact was limited. Israel was at war with Lebanese “Hezbollah” (Hezbollah) and Hamas in 2006 and 2014 respectively.

“As for 2024, it all depends on how long this war lasts and whether there is a deeper conflict in the north,” he said.

Peleg Lewi, a senior adviser to the Israeli Minister of Tourism, pointed out, “If everything goes well, we estimate that we will return to normal by the end of 2024.”
