Jason Kenney resigns after narrowly winning his vote of confidence

Jason Kenney has previously claimed he has no intention of quitting if he gets more than 50% of the vote, however slim his margin of victory may be.

The results are not what I hoped for or, frankly, what I expectedadmitted Jason Kenney immediately after the announcement of the result, adding that this one is not adequate for me to continue as a leader.

He hopes that his resignation will put an end to the internal war which has been tearing the party apart for over a year.

A record 34,298 members voted. Of these, 17,638 voted in support of Jason Kenney and 16,660 voted against him.

Jason Kenney will officially cease to be the leader of the PCU when an interim leader is appointed and a leadership contest is launched. He did not say when he will step down as prime minister.

The vote of confidence was originally scheduled to be held in person on April 9. Given the excessive number of registrations, the party finally choose to do it by mail.

Members had until May 11 to return their completed ballot to the party. The count was made this Wednesday in Calgary.

A real popular resolution

Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche MP and Jason Kenney rival Brian Jean called on the leader of the PCU to resign if he did not get a strong majority of votes in his favour.

For his part, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe thanked Jason Kenney for defeating a destructive NDP government and leading Alberta through a difficult period.

The caucus of PCU is scheduled to meet Thursday at the McDougall Center in Calgary.
