Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com is accelerating its push into robotics with a sweeping plan to automate its nationwide logistics network, aiming to procure 3 million robots, 1 million unstaffed vehicles, and 100,000 delivery drones over the next five years to build a fully automated supply chain.
The Five-Year Industrial Blueprint in Beijing
At a corporate event in Beijing on Wednesday, the technology committee of JD Logistics outlined a massive hardware procurement cycle. Cao Peng, chairman of the technology committee, detailed the five-year roadmap to transform the company’s operational infrastructure. The core of this deployment relies on the newly unveiled industrial Wolf Robot series. According to Liu Lige, head of embodied intelligence robots at JD Logistics, these systems are engineered to absorb repetitive, labor-intensive workflows across picking, sorting, transportation, and delivery.
The hardware specifications target challenging environments head-on. The deployment pipeline incorporates specialized units built to withstand extreme thermal conditions, including operating down to minus 20 degrees Celsius. Alongside warehouse sorting nodes, the logistics arm intends to integrate automated pharmacy dispatchers and delivery drones. This fleet architecture aims to operate with minimal human intervention in high-fatigue segments of the supply chain.
Workforce Redistribution and the Nirvana Plan
JD.com and its ecosystem companies currently employ approximately 700,000 delivery and logistics personnel. To mitigate the friction of mass automation, founder Liu Qiangdong outlined the Nirvana Plan earlier this year. This internal initiative focuses on retraining frontline couriers and warehouse staff for technical roles, transitioning human capital from physical handling to robot servicing and maintenance.
