Keanu Reeves Steps Into Maelstrom as Alan Ritchson Exits Netflix Action Thriller
Keanu Reeves has officially replaced Alan Ritchson as the lead of Maelstrom, a new Netflix action thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, movieweb.com reported. The project casts Reeves as a Federal Marshal who must defend an arms dealer’s fiancée under witness protection from a team of mercenaries while a hurricane isolates them from outside help.
Decades of Development Before Casting Shifts
The feature has spent over thirty years in various stages of development since Warner Bros. originally acquired Gregory Fitzpatrick’s spec script back in 1993 for $625,000, a figure equivalent to about $1.4 million when adjusted for inflation, according to cbr.com. Jeff Robinov, who worked as an agent on that original 1993 sale, now serves as a producer on the film under his new deal with Netflix. Following Fitzpatrick’s passing, writer Mark Bianculli revised the screenplay. The production marks Robinov’s first project under his current Netflix agreement after previously overseeing major franchises like The Dark Knight trilogy during his tenure as a Warner Bros. executive.
Diverging Production Schedules for the Lead Actors
While the exact reasons for Alan Ritchson’s departure from the lead role remain undisclosed by the production, the actor maintains a heavily committed filming schedule. Ritchson is currently filming the fifth season of Prime Video’s Reacher based on Lee Child’s novel Make Me, with a sixth season already renewed. His recent streaming success with Netflix’s War Machine has also secured a sequel in development, alongside his casting to replace Jason Momoa in Sony’s upcoming live-action Helldivers movie, and an upcoming role as a petty crook opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in Prime Video’s Christmas comedy The Man With the Bag.
Reeves also recently made his Broadway debut in a 2025 production of Waiting for Godot alongside Alex Winter, and is set to reprise his voice role as Shadow the Hedgehog in Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 4 slated for 2027.

Neither Netflix nor the production team has announced when cameras will officially begin rolling on Maelstrom, leaving the exact start of production unclear. Casting decisions also remain open regarding the actress who will portray the arms dealer’s fiancée requiring witness protection against the incoming onslaught of mercenaries and the natural disaster.
