Keeping copied audio and video tapes illegal: Saudi tightens copyright law

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia tightens copyright laws. Officials have clarified that possession of counterfeit or copied computer programs or audio and video tapes falls within the ambit of copyright infringement.

Maintenance of electronic equipment using counterfeit or copied computer programs is considered a violation of the law. If it is found that such crimes are committed by the employees of any organization with the knowledge and consent of the heads of the organization, the organizations will also be held responsible. Reproducing, selling, importing, distributing, transferring, publishing, or renting works protected by copyright law is a violation of copyright law.

The Saudis have made it clear that companies providing electronic display systems are in violation of the law even if their devices are decoded or run with fake software.
