Kerry Group reports 17 per cent US snack sales surge

Kerry Group Reports Surge in US Snack Sales as Weight-Loss Drugs Drive Health Trends

Irish ingredients giant Kerry Group has recorded a 17 per cent jump in sales to the US snacks sector, buoyed by growing consumer demand for healthier food options and the mainstreaming of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic.

In Plain English: The Clinical Takeaway

  • Formulation Changes: Food companies are increasingly relying on “food renovation”—reformulating existing products to reduce sodium, sugar, and fat while preserving taste and texture.
  • Metabolic Impact of GLP-1 Medications: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), commonly prescribed for type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management, are driving a narrative around health and wellness.
  • Cardiovascular Health Goals: Despite recent reformulation successes, 80 per cent of snack products in the US still contain sodium levels above World Health Organisation guidelines.

Consumer Push and Corporate Strategy at Kerry Group

Edmond Scanlon, chief executive of Kerry Group, told analysts during an investor briefing that the company’s shift toward health-focused ingredients preceded current political health campaigns. The Make America Healthy Again initiative, championed by Robert F Kennedy jnr, has faced regulatory delays and high-profile departures within Washington. However, public anxiety over ultra-processed foods continues to drive market behavior.

A survey released this month by the American Heart Association indicates that more than 70 per cent of US adults are actively trying to avoid ultra-processed foods. Kerry has deployed an army of 1,200 food scientists utilizing enzymes, fermentation, natural food extracts, bio-preservation, and modulation technologies to reduce salt, sugar, and fat content.

Metric / Financial Indicator Previous Performance Current Target / Status
US Snacks Sector Sales Growth Flat overall market 17 per cent increase (Kerry)
EBITDA Margin 14.5 per cent 17.9 per cent, targeting 20–21 per cent
Volume Growth (Q3 Update) 3.6 per cent (first half) 4.1 per cent (third quarter)

The GLP-1 Accelerator and Future Market Projections

The widespread adoption of GLP-1 receptor agonists is acting as an accelerator for ingredient manufacturers. Scanlon noted that three years into the mainstreaming of these pharmacological interventions, the drugs have proven to be an accelerator for the business. Whether individuals are actively prescribed these therapies or not, the broader cultural shift toward wellness is expanding demand for specialized nutritional solutions.

This protein craze and focus on metabolic health present unique chemical challenges, such as the bitter and chalky taste profiles associated with high-protein formulations. Kerry’s proprietary taste-masking technologies are designed to resolve these sensory hurdles. Driven by these advancements, the addressable value-added speciality ingredients market is projected to expand from €87 billion to more than €100 billion over the next five to 10 years.

Barclays Analysis and Market Trajectory

Kerry’s shares have surged about 55 per cent since late March, coming within 20 cent of €100 on Friday in Dublin. This financial recovery follows a 50 per cent slump from an all-time high reached five years ago. Volume growth in the third quarter rose to 4.1 per cent, up from 3.6 per cent in the first half of the year.

“Kerry’s Q3 update and subsequent [analysts’] call reinforce our confidence that the recent step-up in volume growth is sustainable, supported by renovation rather than any material improvement in underlying end markets,” Barclays analyst Alex Sloane stated in a report on Friday. North America continues to lead this growth, while the European market remains comparatively fragmented and weak.
